Working primarily in clay and casting in a wide variety of materials, Russell creates sculptures that combine strength with a playful and engaging quality. Her work often captures the essence of her subjects with economy of form, resulting in pieces that are both immediate and enduring.
Her work has been widely exhibited and is held in private and public collections. At The Lion Street Gallery, we are pleased to present Tanya Russell as part of our programme supporting contemporary artists from Wales and the Borders.
Russell’s sculptures are increasingly sought after by collectors of contemporary British art, particularly those interested in modern figurative and animal sculpture with a distinctive and recognisable style.

‘THROUGH CLEAR WATER’ OTTERS SWIMMING THROUGH RING SCULPTURE
Otters for me have always symbolised the beauty of our truly wild and pure countryside. There is a magic about seeing otters in nature that I think is almost unrivalled. I wanted to capture the incredible fluidity and joy that they show when swimming and I wanted the ring to help depict a world where these creatures can live and play in their habits unharmed by pollution and insensitive development.
The ‘Through Clear Water’ Otters Swimming Through Ring sculpture would still play on the symbolism of the ring as a world. This was important to me because I’d been really impressed by David Attenborough’s success in spreading the message about plastic polluting our rivers and oceans worldwide. The work that charities like Plastic Oceans and others are doing, will benefit us, and our planet, and I hope that this is one problem that we will be able to solve in my generation.
This bronze Swimming Otters statue bears Tanya’s signature and unique edition number. Your casting of the Otter sculpture will be personally approved and will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
10% of the proceeds from this bronze wildlife sculpture support the ‘David Shepherd Wildlife Trust’ animal charity.
